This is a Willamette Valley Kalapuya mini burden basket. It is made with juncus, mud dyed maple bark and beargrass. The materials are juncus effuses, beargrass and big leaf maple bark.
The basket starts with a wrapped bundle of six juncus rushes divided into groups of two in first row and turned up sharply. It is twined up to the right over paired warps, close with three rows open plain, one row cross warp near top. The rim is braided- behind one, in front two, finished to the inside.
The basket has eight rows in two bands of four wefts, where one weft is dyed maple bark. Near the base of the basket there are four rows of beargrass overlay.
