This basket cap is made of spruce root wefts, and hazel warp with beargrass and maidenhair fern overlay in a zigzag design. It is from the Southern Oregon area. No known weaver.
3.75" tall X 6.75" wide
It is twined plain, up to the right, with one face overlay over most of surface. The start is a 4x4 cross and wrapped parallel twined around 4 in one row and then divided singly. The design is overlay done in white beargrass and black maidenhair fern. The rim is clipped off close to the last row. There is a tiny piece of dark thread binding the last few stitches.
Basket caps represent our lives. The cap is made into 3 sections. The top of the cap until the raised twined row is the beginning or our infant life, the main portion of the cap, where the main design is seen, represents our adult life, which is the biggest because it is the main part of our life. The rim is the elder or our last stage of life.
