The Tribe has selected Leland Butler as the 2024 Indigenous Place Keeping Artist (IPKA) Fellow. During the Fellowship, Leland will focus on centering historic pieces of land important to the Western Oregon Indigenous people by utilizing the genres of landscape photography, photojournalism, and environmental portraiture. This new body of work aims to give more indigenous visibility and reflection to the places that our ancestors occupied and contribute to the forward effort of continued liberation.
Leland Butler (Grand Ronde/Siletz/Yurok) started taking photos ten years ago out of curiosity about self, land, and people. His compositions demonstrate a sophistication of the art form and sensitivity to the imagery held within, inviting opportunities for deeper personal contemplation.
If you want to see some of Leland’s previous work, he has an exhibition at the Linfield Gallery in McMinnville, OR, titled “Connected to the Land” through May 3rd. Gallery hours are M-F 9 am - 5 pm and Sat. 12-5 pm.
The Tribe accepts applications for the IPKA Fellowship between November and January, with new Fellows selected in March each year.
